Review by Anu Moorthy – Sri NSG Concert

The concert followed a traditional pattern by starting with Viribhoni Ata Tala Varnam(in Ragam Bhairavi). This was followed by Patnam Subramanyam Iyer’s Begada Krithi “Abhimanamu”. This was followed by a good sketch of Ragam Pantuvarali using the Appa Rama Bhakthi(Thyagaraja compositon) including the neraval for “Kapi varidhi daatuna”. The concert included krithis in Ragam Kalanidhi(Chinna naade, Thyagaraja), Hindolam(Swati Tirunal Composition). NSK then elaborated Kedaragowla Krithi Saragunapalimpa (Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar) including alapana, neraval and kalpanaswaram. The major highlight of the concert is the extempore selection of RTP’s ragam in Kaapi set to Dhruva Talam for the Bharathiyar’s Pallavi (andha chittukuruviyai pole). The rendition was lilting and Kapi’s contours were brought out by both the artist and the Violinist. The concluding pieces were couple of Krithis in Ragam Suruti, Hamir Kalyani(Parimala gandham), Behag Tillana, Sabapathikku (Abhogi).

The Violinist and the mridangist provided a great support to the main artist by complementing the raga/krithi elaboration and the rhythm aspects and enhancing the concert significantly. Overall it was a sumptuous concert with good selection of ragams and krithis rendered with traditional classicism.

The artist with his Carnatic Idol judging background made the audience interact in choosing some of the Krithis. Also he quizzed the audience(appearance of Ragam Hamir Kalyani in the Parimala gandham krithi, identifying a sangati in Kapi etc.) to make the concert very interactive and interesting.
